At home with my little watermelon 4-26-08

It was great to see Alba on Friday. She looked so grown up and tall. She was speaking in several full sentences at a time, she dresses herself, gets on the carseat all by herself, and she is officially off diapers, even to go to sleep. We had lots of fun that weekend. We went to the park in Pasadena on Saturday, then on Sunday to the kids space museum where she had a blast in the water play area, and we also visited the UCLA book fair. It was also really exhausting, she has soooooo much energy. It definitely did not help me with my jetlag, but it was so worth it.

Me encanto ver a Alba el viernes. Ha cambiado tanto en tan poco tiempo, esta tan grande y alta. Ya habla mucho, con frases bastante largas, se viste sola, se monta en el coche sola, y ya ha dejado los panales, incluso para dormir. Nos los pasamos bastante bien este fin de semana. Fuimos al parque en Pasadena el sabado, luego el domingo fuimos al museo aeronautico donde se lo paso pipa en la zona acuatica, y por la tarde fuimos a la feria del libro en UCLA. Me dejo super cansada, pues ella tiene muchisima energia. Desde luego no me ayudo con la diferencia de horario, pues segui agotada, pero merecio mucho la pena.

I put on her the little cute watermelon outfit I got her in China. I have always thought Alba is very cute bc I am her mom and obviously subjective, but this weekend two random strangers took pictures of her bc she was so cute and I got tons of complements about her. I guess Noe and I did well on our genetic recombination.


Le puse su conjuntito con forma de sandia que le compre en China, estaba super graciosa. Yo siempre he dicho que mi nina es guapisima, pero como soy su madre supongo que soy muy subjetiva, pero este fin de semana varias personas que no conociamos querian echarles fotos a Alba por lo linda que se veia en su ropita nueva. Supongo que la recombinacion genetica entre Noe y yo nos salio bastante bien.

Last day in Beijing 4-25-08

We left for the airport on Friday at 1pm, bc our flight was at 4'40pm. PUMC arranged a van to take us to the airport. We hanged out for a little while at a Hagendaz shop at the airport with Brendan, Susie's hot Aussie friend. We were all very excited and I personally could not sleep the whole flight, just thinking about getting to see my little girl got my adrenaline pumping! When we arrived at the airport, Aaron was waiting for Judith with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I myself got to arrivals, got my luggage and then went up to departures to fly straight down to LA.

Nos fuimos para el aeropuerto el viernes a las una de la tarde, ya que nuestro vuelo salia a las 4'30pm. PUMC reservo una camioneta para llevarnos al aeropuerto. En el aeropuerto comimos un poco de helado en el Hagendaz con Brendan, el nuevo "amigo" australiano de Susie. Estabamos todas muy contentas de poder irnos a casa pronto. Yo ni podia dormir en el avion de lo ilusionada que estaba, pues nada mas pensar que iba a ver a mi Alba pronto, se me subia la adrenalina!! Cuando llegamos al aeropuerto, Aaron estaba esperando a Judith con un precioso ramo de flores. Yo llegue al aeropuerto de San Francisco y cogi otro vuelo immediatamente a Los Angeles.

Bamboo Park 4-23-08

With two days to go before our departure, we decided to visit a bamboo park in Beijing. We packed some food and had a picnic in the sun. The scenery was pretty nice, but we really wanted to rent some boats and hang out at the lake, which we could not do bc it was a bit too windy. The peony flowers were blossoming and it smelled really good. The bus ride there was about an hour, and it was pretty crowded as you can see on the pictures.

En nuestros ultimos dias en Pekin decidimos irnos a dar un paseo a un parque de bambu. Nos hicimos unos sandwiches y tuvimos un picnic al solecito, unos de los pocos dias soleados en Pekin. El paisaje estaba bastante bien, pero queriamos alquilar unos de esos barquitos para pedalear en el lago, pero hacia demasiado viento. Las flores "peony" estaban floreciendo en esta temporada y todo el parque olia super bien. Tardamos una hora en llegar al parque en autobus, el cual estaba bastante lleno como podeis ver en las fotos.

Karaoke night, Harvard goodbye 4-17-08

After spending close to two months we our fellow Harvard exchage students, we had become pretty attached. The eight of us have been comessurating about how much we miss home, discussed our views on Chinese healthcare, went out eating, shopping and dancing together and really became each other's surrogate family. They had arrived to China one week earlier than us, and therefore left a week before us. On the last day, we had a wrap up session with the PUMC administration and went out to lunch. During our wrap up session we received certificates and an olympic mug as a souvenir. We went to a very upscale Sichuan restaurant close by. The food was great, most of it pretty spicy and with a lot of pork, so I only got to enjoy a few dishes, but they were great. Their fresh watermelon, mango and papaya juice was amazing.

Después de pasar cerca de dos meses con los otro cuatro estudiantes de intercambio que vinieron de Harvard, nos hicimos bastante buenos amigos. Los ocho nos consolabamos el uno al otro cuando echabamos de menos nuestra familia, discutiamos nuestras opiniones acerca del sistema de salud chino, salimos a comer, ir de compras y bailar juntos y realmente nos sentimos como una familia adoptiva. Ellos llegaron a China una semana antes que nosotros, y por lo tanto se fueron una semana antes de nosotros. En el ultimo día, tuvimos una reunion de despedida con la administración de PUMC y salimos a almorzar. Durante nuestra reunion recibimos unos certificados de haber completado el curso en PUMC, y una taza olímpica como recuerdo. Fuimos luego a almorzar a un restaurante cercano de comida regional de Sichuan. El restaurante era bastante lujosa, y la comida muy sofisticada, aunque la mayor parte era picante y con mucha carne de cerdo, así que conseguí solamente probar algunos platos, los cuales estaban buenisimos. Su jugo fresco de la sandía, del mango y de la papaya era asombroso.

Later on in the evening we all went out for one last night of karaoke. We also invited other PUMC students that we have met along the way to say goodbye. Overall, it was a pretty fun night, but it made us sad that we, the UCSF students were left behind in China. We are all just waiting to go home too!

Despues por la tarde/noche salimos a cenar y cantar karaoke juntos por la ultima vez. Tambien invitamos a varios estudiantes de PUMC con los que nos hicimos amigos en estos meses, para despedirnos. Nos lo pasamos bastante bien esa noche, pero nos entristecio mucho verlos irse mientras nosotras, las estudiantes de UCSF nos quedamos aqui en China. Nosotras tambien queremos irnos a casa!

Tongli, Suzhou 4-14-08

After two days in Hangzhou we decided to go to a neighboring village that was close to Suzhou. We took a bus to Suzhou for about 2 hours and then another bus from Suzhou to Tongli for about 30 mins. In order to enter this antique village you have to pay an entrance fee which is really used to preserve this charming town. You get to see all 10 sites of the village with the entrance fee, which made it totally worth it. After walking into the town, we fell in love with the quiet atmosphere, the kindness of the people, and the cute old ladies who would sit on the side of the street and just knit. Our bed and breakfast was also awesome. The floor was made of old stone, at the entrance there were two old style Chinese chairs and table with very own tea set, two beautifully decorated beds with heater blankets on, and a great western style bathroom. We had the best sleep and shower there in our whole two months in China.

Después de dos días en Hangzhou decidimos ir a un pueblo vecino que estaba cerca de Suzhou. Nos fuimos en autobús a Suzhou (2 horas) y luego cogimos otro autobús de Suzhou a Tongli (cerca de 30 minutos). Para entrar en este pueblo habia que pagar entrada, dinero que se utiliza para preservar esta ciudad encantadora. Con esta entrada pudimos ver las 10 atracciones del pueblo, lo cual valio muchisimo la pena. Después de caminar un rato por la ciudad, nos enamoramos de la atmósfera tranquila y placentera, de la amabilidad de la gente, y de las señoras mayores muy graciosas que se sentaban al lado de la calle y hacian punto. Nuestro hotel era la casa de una persona que vivia en Tongli, y la estancia fue maravillosa. El suelo estaba hecho de piedra de marmol, en la entrada del cuarto habia dos sillas chinas de estilo antiguo, una mesa con nuestro propio set de té verde, dos camas maravillosamente adornadas un edredon chino rojo, y con mantas del calentador, y un cuarto de baño del estilo de americano, con WC de sentarse y ducha con suelo y techo de bambu y cabeza de ducha occidental. Dormimos con unos angelitos y tuvimos la mejor ducha que hemos tenido en estos dos meses en China.

The village itself was really charming, with lots of canals and bridges, in fact, they call Suzhou area the Venice of China. There were lots of little restaurants and tea houses along the canals, so it felt like a very romantic stroll. Too bad our significant others were not around. All the sites are historically famous, being houses of important generals or gardens of some emperor. The scenary was just very pretty, but most importantly, it was about the only place in China that we found to be truly peaceful. Another bonus was the fact that all the shops there were very cheap, bc it was not a big city or turistic spot, so we stocked up on cute Chinese style clothing.

El pueblo en sí es realmente encantador, con muchos canales y puentes, de hecho, a esta área de Suzhou la llaman la Venecia de China. Había muchos pequeños restaurantes y casas del té a lo largo de los canales, así que nos dimos unos paseos muy románticos. Que pena que nuestras parejas respectivas no estaban con nosotras. Todas las atracciones de Tongli son históricamente famosas, con casas de generales o jardines de algún emperador importante. El paisaje era muy bonito, pero lo más importante, es que este es el unico lugar de China que encontramos que es verdaderamente pacífico y no lleno de gente. Otro detalle fuel el hecho de que todas las tiendas allí eran muy baratas, porque ni era una grande ciudad ni un sitio demasiado turistico, así que que compramos bastante ropa de estilo chino baratisima.

Old market street, Hangzhou 4-13-08

After a whole day of exploring the outskirts of Hangzhou, we decided to frolic up and down the old street with plenty of crafty and food stands that was close to our hotel. We saw a great display of their craftsmanship, with clothing of unique designs, musical instruments, puppet shows, interesting jewelery, Chinese lamps and knots, and lots of yummy local food. We had our snack dinner and went back to our hotel to pack to go to Suzhou the next day, a town that was about 2 hours by bus from Hangzhou. Suzhou is famous for their gardens and silk. Actually right after we arrived there the next day, we took a short 30 min bus ride to Tongli, a small village next to Suzhou. We felt we had had our share of big cities and wanted some peace a quiet. Tongli was just what we needed, check out the next post.

Después de un día entero explorando las atracciones lejanas de Hangzhou, decidimos darnos un paseillo por la calle antigua cercana a nuestro hotel en Hangzhou, donde tienen un montón de puestecillos con cosas de artesania y comidas tipicas. Vimos una gran exhibición de su artesanía, con ropa de diseños únicos, instrumentos musicales regionales, demostraciones marionetas, pendientes y colgantes interesante, lámparas y nudos chinos, y comidas locales deliciosas. Cenamos en el mercaillo y nos volvimos a nuestro hotel a empacar para ir a Suzhou el día siguiente, una ciudad a 2 horas en autobús de Hangzhou. Suzhou es famoso por sus jardines y la seda natural. Justo después de llegar allí el día siguiente, nos montamos en otro autobus para Tongli, un pueblito pequeño a 30 minutos de Suzhou. Estabamos un poco hartas de andar en ciudades grandes turisticas, asi que queriamos ir a un sitio mas tranquilo y chiquitito. Tongli era justo lo que necesitabamos.

Haircut outing 4-10-08

Stylish haircuts in China are much cheaper than in the US, so Yile, Judith and I decided to have a make over and go to this famous salon in Beijing, where you can get a haircut by the master stylist and owner for $10. I should also add that this haircut includes a nice hairwash, blow dry and shoulder and scalp massage. You can check out the pictures of the before and after here. I also got a wave done, bc I was too bored of long straight hair. After our hair make over we went out to dinner to a Yunan restaurant, a Southern province of China with very distinctive food that includes Jasmine egg and pumpkin cakes.

Los cortes de pelo son mucho mas baratos en China que en los EEUU, asi que Yile, Judith y yo decidimos darnos un "nuevo loook" en una peluqueria famosilla en Pekin, donde por $10 el dueno y estilista profesional te da un corte de pelo chulisimo, y ademas te lavan el pelo, te dan un masage en los hombros y te secan y peinan el pelo para que salgas hecha toda una diva. Podeis ver las fotos del antes y el despues aqui. Yo ademas me hice la permanente, pues me gusta el pelo ondulado y estaba harta y aburrida del pelo largo lacio. Despues de nuestros cortes de pelo nos fuimos a cenar a un restaurante de comida de la provincia de Yunan, la cual esta al sur de China y tiene una gastronomia muy diferente, la cual incluye platos como huevos con flores de jazmin y postres de calabaza.
