Our living arrangements at PUMC

After a long flight, we were happy to meet the student coordinator at the airport. She took us to the "nursing building," which is essentially a dorm for medical students and residents right across from the hospital.

Despues de un largo vuelo, nos alegramos de ver a la coordinadora de nuestro viaje en el aeropuerto. Ella nos llevo al "edificio de las enfermeras," el cual en realidad es una residencia donde viven las estudiantes de medicina y las residentes (mujeres solamente!). Esta justo en frente del hospital.

I thought that once I graduated from college I would never see the common bathrooms, small rooms and dining halls ever again, but I guess I was wrong. Our room was dusty as it could be, dirty, very old, and two hard beds without sheets were waiting for us. Judith and I share a room, Yile and Susie share the other room. Across from us, the Harvad students have the same living situation. The two rooms are connected by a bathroom that was pretty nasty. The toilet was broken, with a very weak flush that was not able to tolerate anything more than a number one. The toilet seat was made of styroform (spelling?), the sink is essentially a big square tub with a spout that comes from the tubes on the wall, and the shower is a big piece of wooden board with a tube that comes off the wall. Being as clean as I am, I needed to give the bathroom an extreme makeover. See the before and after pictures! Apparently we should be thankful bc the PUMC students actually have only one bathroom for the floor, a squat toilet for the whole floor, and 4 students share the room instead. Our rooms are in a special area of the building, separate from the rest of the students, maybe so that they do not get jealous??

Yo pensaba que despues de haberme graduado de UCLA ya no iba a ver nunca mas los banos comunes, los cuartillos chicos y los comedores de la residencia, pero obviamente no contaba con esta experiencia. Judith y yo compartimos un cuarto, Yile y Susie comparten el otro. En frente de nuestros cuartos, otros iguales donde estan los cuatro estudiantes de Harvard que tambien vienen a quedarse dos meses. Los dos cuartos estan conectados mediante el cuarto de bano que compartimos las cuatro, y estaba bastante asqueroso cuando llegamos. El WC estaba roto, no se podia tirar de la cadena, el asiento estaba hecho de un plastico malisimo, el lavamos es un cuadrado grande con un grifo que sale de las tuberias en la pared, y la ducha no es nada mas ni nada menos que un pedazo de madera en el suelo con las tuberias pegadas a la pared, curte tota. Con lo limpia que soy yo, le tube que dar un nuevo "look" a nuestro bano, aqui podeis ver las fotos del antes y el despues. Pero aparentemente no deberiamos de quejarnos porque los estudiantes de aqui estan en peor situacion. Ellas comparent una ducha por planta, y un bano por planta tambien, y es de esos que te tienes que agachar pues es esencialmente solo un agujero en el suelo. Nuestros cuartos estan separados del resto de los estudiantes, supongo para que no les den celos?
